Obituary:
Mom passed away suddenly but peacefully at home on December 19th, 2009.

Our mom was born the second of twins on April 13, 1923 on the family farm outside of Rorketon, much to the surprise of the local midwife who delivered them. Mom always said how fortunate she was to be raised in a loving environment that not only included her caring parents but her six siblings and numerous close family friends.

She received her education at Cecil School. This was a one room country school of which mom had fond memories. Mom loved learning and excelled academically. As well as being a great student, she was an accomplished athlete and enjoyed all sports. In 1987, she was excited to attend the Cecil School reunion, where she had the wonderful opportunity to catch up with classmates, as well as her teachers.

At the age of 16 mom met dad, the love of her life, who came to Rorketon to help on his aunt’s farm.

On March 27, 1951, mom and dad were married in Brandon. Dad’s work took him to several communities in southern Manitoba, including Winnipeg. Mom readily adjusted to these changes in her life, always providing a happy and loving home for her husband and three daughters.

In 1962, dad accepted a job in Dauphin. Although mom loved the “Big City of Winnipeg”, she was thrilled at the prospect of being closer to family and friends in Rorketon.

Family always came first, however as we grew more independent this allowed mom to pursue other interests. She was an original member of the Saturday Night Curling Club, as well as a member of the Afternoon Ladies League.

Her volunteer work included the Canadian Cancer Society and the Heart and Stroke Foundation. In later years she enjoyed long walks in the neighbourhood, her garden and flowers, as well as attending exercise classes at the Senior Centre. She so enjoyed these classes, when she was asked to fill in as an instructor, she was more than happy to do so.

Mom’s parents immigrated from Finland and mom was very proud of her Finnish heritage. One of mom’s fondest memories was her trip to Finland with her sister Mamie.

Mom had a very special bond with each of her grandchildren. They all will hold dear very special memories of the best Grandma in the world. Mom was thrilled when her first and only great-grandchild arrived. Lydia brought so much joy to her life.

Mom was a very kind and nurturing lady and she always put others’ needs ahead of her own.

She was a wonderful cook and hostess. We are sure everyone left our home with a smile.

We know mom would want everyone to remember her with love and laughter.

Love and hugs forever,
Elaine and Shelley

Mom was predeceased by her parents, John and Ellen; brothers, Vilho, twin brother Aimo, Melvin and Melfort; daughter, Marilyn and husband Bill Ficzycz; and granddaughter, Devon Lamblin.

She is survived by her husband, Frank; daughters, Elaine (John Lamblin) and Shelley (John Pauch); grandchildren, David, Allison (B.J. Jaman) and Matthew Ficzycz; great-granddaughter, Lydia Jaman; one sister, Mamie Grant; one brother, Roy Hill. Mom is also survived by many nieces, nephews and close friends.

Funeral service was held on Wednesday, December 23, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. from the St. Viator’s Roman Catholic Church in Dauphin with Fr. Yolando Gamallo officiating. Mary Kay Scinocca served as organist, accompanying St. Viator’s Choir. Interment followed in the Dauphin Riverside Cemetery.

The family would like to thank Brenda Laronde and the home care workers for all their compassion and being here for our mom. Also a very big thank you to all mom’s neighbours – without you mom would have never been able to stay in her beloved home.

If friends so desire, a donations in mom’s memory may be made to either the Dauphin Personal Care Home, 625 3rd Street S.W., Dauphin MB, R7N 1R7 or to The Compassionate Friends, 685 William Avenue, Winnipeg MB, R3E 0Z2.

She received her education in Milo, and in 1923 at the age of 10 her family moved to Canada, settling in the Birch River-Lenswood area, where she completed her schooling at Steele School in Birch River.
