Peacefully, on Sunday, July 26, 2009, at the Dr. Gendreau Memorial Personal Care Home in Ste. Rose du Lac, Fjola J. (Violet) Mailman passed away at the age of 93 years.

Violet was born on August 31, 1915 at Beaver Dam, Manitoba, to Steini and Margaret Johnson (nee Helgason). She moved with her family at a young age to Lonely Lake and received her education at the Larkspur School. Violet grew up in a large family and had a twin sister Olive with whom she was very close.

She married Marsi Erlendson on March 25, 1937. They farmed and ranched at Reykjavik and had four children Steini, Christopher, Sylvia and Valerie. After selling the ranch, Violet and her family resided in several places. They owned hotels in St. Laurent and Gladstone until Marsi’s passing in 1967.

Violet met Walter Mailman and they were married in 1968. They lived at Asham Point where they ranched. Upon retirement, they moved to Lake Manitoba Narrows where they ran a bed and breakfast. Violet continued in this venture after Walter’s passing. As her health declined, Violet moved to the Dr. Gendreau Personal Care Home in Ste. Rose du Lac where she resided until her passing.

William was born on March 8th, 1920 on a homestead near Toutes Aides, Manitoba in the RM of Lawrence, to Mike and Mary Maksymchuk (Kolkichka). He attended Toutes Aides School and then later Micawber School where his teacher sparked an interest in geology that would later set him into road construction. He earned his living on the family farm, by clearing the land, cultivating, and developing it. He also cut wood and sawed lumber, enjoying hunting with his two hound dogs as well as trapping. He also worked on the construction of Toutes Aides’ Ukrainian Catholic Church.

Later, he was stationed at Lethbridge, Prince Rupert, Vernon and Esquimalt. He worked as an equipment operator, operating a caterpillar on the Alaska Highway in the year of 1941. William continued to work in the road construction industry until his retirement in 1983. They then moved and established residence south of Dauphin in 1983. In his retirement, William enjoyed pursuing his interests such as sawing lumber on his sawmill, big game hunting and going uptown to visit his friends at the various coffee shops in Dauphin. William and Mary loved spending time at their cabin at Manipogo Beach as well as planting large gardens during the summer months for many years. They especially cherished the time with their children and grandchildren.

Prayers:  June 1, 2009,7:00 PM ,
Funeral:  June 2, 2009, 2:00 PM, St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, Ebb & Flow MB
Obituary:
With her family surrounding her with love, we said goodbye to Mom on Friday, May 29, 2009 at the Ste. Rose General Hospital after a long hard five year battle with cancer.

Leona Donna Malcolm was born on November 13, 1941 and raised on the Ebb & Flow First Nation by her parents Jerry and Alice Houle (nee Thompson). She met her soul mate Geordie Malcolm and they were married on August 22, 1959. Together they had seven children. Mom and Dad lost 2 daughters; their first child Darlene in 1960 and Maureen in 1977.

Leona leaves to mourn her passing and cherish many fond memories; her 4 daughters; Carol (Lloyd), Sheila, Carmen (Emile), Paulette (Jonathan) and one son Darrel (Thora). She also took in and loved Amanda Malcolm, Elaine Houle Malcolm, Kelly Houle and Joan Malcolm as her own, 9 grandchildren Ryan, Scott, Aline, Ricky, Cheyenne, Chelsey, Trenton, Georgia and Daniel, 6 great grandchildren Brayden, Jasmine, Jastin, Tessa, Shayla and Baby Scotty, her son-in-law Ronnie Flett, her sister Gladys Whitford, 2 brothers Geordie, Russell (Marge), 2 sisters-in-law Beatrice Delorme and Kathleen Houle, her in-laws Doris Flatfoot and Mary Houle of Ebb & Flow, Lillian (Angus) of Sandy Bay, Joe (Lydia) of Winnipeg, Ernest (Charlotte) of Vancouver, BC and Violet McKay of Cross Lake, her godchildren Muriel Flett-Malcolm, Geordie Campbell, Duane Houle, Crystal Racette, Brenda Mae Flett, Pearl Baptiste Houle, Sheila Whitford, Lena Malcolm, Myrna Whitford, Anne Renee Malcolm and Vincent Houle, along with numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and many friends.

Leona was predeceased by her husband Geordie on September 26, 1998, daughters Darlene in November of 1960, Maureen on August 23, 1977, her granddaughter Allison Dawn Malcolm on July 17, 1999, her mother Alice, father Jerry, her brothers Stanley, Alfred and Lionel, her sister Edna Flett, her in-laws Joyce Houle, Joe Whitford, Frank Ducharme and Allan Flett, her mother-in-law Madeline, her father-in-law Charlie, and brothers-in-law David McKay and Jim Houle.

Leona worked as a store clerk at Wilkinson’s Store for a number of years. In 1983, she began working as a custodian at the Ebb & Flow Band Office. In May of 2001, she moved with the Health Staff to their new building to work there as a custodian until her illness prevented her from working any longer.

Whenever anyone saw Leona, chances were good that one, if not all of her daughters were with her. She would always laugh about this and say Theresa and her girls. She was so ecstatic when she found that her baby boy Darrel was having her first baby at such a late age. She was so proud when Georgia, her little chatterbox was born and was even prouder when baby Daniel was born. Leona was proud of Chelsey and Trenton for getting their Black Belts in Tae Kwon Do. Leona was already ill by that point and still made an effort to go to their tests and competitions in Winnipeg.

Leona loved to collect loonies and toonies; she had a bin where she would keep them. If anyone asked for change, she would never give any. Although she would never hand any over, they were always available for a game of cards. She often attended workshops in Winnipeg with Jo-Anne and Roger and would come home with stories of the laughter that always happened with the three of them got together.

Leona was known by several different names; Mauzzey from Amanda, Kelly and Elaine, Kooks from her grandchildren, Ko-Ko Brown from Elaine’s kids and Laloanskie from Jonathan.

Leona was a beautiful and generous person. She could never say no to anyone, if it was her last few dollars, she would give to anyone in need. She was a very religious person. She sat on the Church Committee and she loved to pray and attended mass on a regular basis, until the past couple of months. One of Leona’s last requests was to encourage her children and grandchildren to continue going to mass and to pray for one another.

She was a hard working woman. Leona loved to cook, sew, plant flowers, cut grass and mop the patio deck. She really enjoyed her yard work. Leona would plant flowers every year at the cemetery between her husband and granddaughter’s graves, her parents, daughters and other relatives. Her main concern every spring was to maintain the cemetery. She made star blankets for family and friends. Leona also loved to play bingo, cards, rummoli and dice with her family. Her last game of dice with her family was on May 20th. She won that game and laughed about beating them, but it took a lot out of her to play that game.

Most of Leona’s time in the last months was spent in bed because of trouble sitting up. She battled cancer for the past five years and her wish was to pass at home like her husband Geordie did. At her request, the ambulance was called and her last hours were spent at the Ste. Rose Hospital with her family at her side. Her final word spoken was “Mom” and on May 29 at 6:45 AM, Dad came for Mom and she took his hand and went home with him.

The family would like to acknowledge the special people who supported Mom during her last days on this earth. She struggled with her disease with great difficulty. But, she managed to keep her pride and dignity and always remained in high spirits.

A traditional wake and prayer service began on Monday, June 1, 2009 at 5:00 PM at Leona’s residence on the Ebb & Flow First Nation. Funeral Mass was held on Tuesday, June 2, 2009 at 2:00 PM from St. Joseph’s Church, Ebb & Flow First Nation. Fr. Paul Tinguely officiated with the interment following in the Ebb & Flow Cemetery. The eulogy was given by her daughter Paulette.

Honorary pallbearers were Mary “Topsy” Flett, Lorena Flett Ross, Vivian Spence, Muriel Flett-Malcolm, Jo-Anne Mentuck, Amanda Malcolm, Lily Swan, Corinne Houle, Lillian Houle, Lauren Ducharme, Gertrude & Danny Flett, Sylvia and Marty Flett, Mary C. Houle, Doris Flatfoot, Charmaine Maytwayashing, Vanessa Hunter, Francine Flett Monkman, Elaine Malcolm, Kayla and April.

“Auntie Leona

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for everything you did for Amanda and I and for taking our children as your own grandchildren. I guess it was me you were waiting for to get home before you left us to go the spirit world. “

Love always
Kelly

“Would you please send your best angel for my momma?
I don’t want her to make that journey all alone
Would you send the same one you sent for Daddy?
To make sure that my momma makes it home”
