Jean Nakonechny of Pine River, Manitoba passed away at the Dauphin Regional Health Centre on Friday, October 9, 2009 at the age of 94 years.
Jean was born on January 10, 1915 in Pine River, Manitoba to John and Barbara (Stawchiw) Romaniuk. She was educated in Pine River School.
Following school, Jean lived at home but provided housekeeping and child care for neighbouring families.
She married Michael Nakonechny on January 25, 1936. They lived together with her parents until their home was built. They farmed together until they gradually retired. In 1984, they moved from the farm to the Village of Pine River.
She was involved with the Sisterhood of the Ukrainian Catholic Church in Pine River.
She had many loved in her life, but most important was for her family. She loved to garden, especially flowers. She loved animals and especially the birds that fed in front of the window. When she retired, she loved to paint with Tri-Chem, knit, and color her wooden Easter eggs. She created many crafts with items she had like seed ornaments, poppy pod with glitter and many well dressed dolls. In her later years, she loved to read, watch television, do plastic canvas and color, all of which she was forced to give up with failing eyesight. She loved to visit. Even with failing hearing, she loved the smiles and “hellos” from people she would see on her outings. She loved music and loved to dance and sing right to the end of her life.
She was predeceased by her husband Michael in 1991; her parents John and Barbara Romaniuk; her sisters Anne Mulessa, Slowka Kostiuk; her brother Dmytro; her great-granddaughter Olivia.
She is survived by her daughters Adeline (Steve) Parcey, Diane (Bill) Boychuk, Celia (David) Clouson, Nadia (Isadore) Hykawy; her son Manuel (Nadia); 18 grandchildren, 34 great grandchildren, 3 great-great grandchildren; 4 sisters-in-law Anne Kotyluk, Jessie Slonowski, Betty Maksymiw, Jean Hykawy; brother-in-law Fred; many nieces, nephews and extended family.

| Obituary: |
Edward Nakonechny of Dauphin, Manitoba passed away in Grand Forks, North Dakota on Saturday, October 24, 2009 at the age of 71 years.
Ed was born November 12, 1937. He was raised in Pine River on a farm nine miles Northeast of town. After attending a country school he began working for Manitoba Hydro at 15 years of age. He also worked for a short time with the Manitoba Government in Mines and Natural Resources. The majority of his working years were spent with the Department of Highways where he spent 37 years as a surveyor.
He married Nettie Ukrainec on October 11, 1958. They moved to Dauphin where they raised three children.
Ed spent many years both playing and following the sports activities of his kids. He was a long-time fan of the Dauphin Kings and Boulevard Bullies. Once he retired, he and Nettie were avid campers. Travelling to many parts of Canada was very important, notably places such as Vancouver, Terrace, B.C., Jasper, Columbia Icefields, Alaska and Ottawa, Ontario. He enjoyed his weekly card games and looked forward to daily get-togethers with the “coffee crowd”. He found the most joy in spending time with his grandchildren of whom he was extremely proud. Ed was a man who liked to smile and tease, and always enjoyed a good story or joke. Ed was a man who offered his services to everyone first, his family, his church and his community. His strong Catholic upbringing was evident in all his daily activities.
He was grateful to be a cancer and heart attack survivor in recent years.
Ed was very involved with the Ukrainian Catholic Church, first as an Elder, then as part of the Brotherhood. He enjoyed his involvement as a Third Degree Knight with the Knights of Columbus.
He was predeceased by his parents Bill and Pauline Nakonechny; his grandson Bryan James Nakonechny; his mother-in-law Mary Galay and father-in-law Peter Ukrainec; his step father-in-law Anthony Galay; his brothers-in-law Paul Gingera Mike Matwick, Joe Kadas, and Bill Ukrainec; his sister-in-law Rose Ukrainec.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Nettie; his daughter Peggy (Bill) Zazalak and their children Alyssa, Kaylee and Taleah; his son Pat (Laurie) Nakonechny and their children Kaitlin, Rae and Haley; and his son Perry (Mickie) Nakonechny and their children Brenna and Tyler; brothers Barry(Jan) Nakonechny, David (Shirley) Nakonechny and sister Florence Gingera; sisters-in-law Nellie Matwick, Lee Kadas, and Ann (John) Karr; also survived by many nieces, nephews and extended family.
Rosary led by the Ukrainian Catholic Brotherhood was held on Wednesday, October 28, 2009 at 5:00 p.m. from the Ukrainian Catholic Church of the Resurrection in Dauphin, followed by prayers at 5:30 p.m. Funeral service was held on Thursday, October 29, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. from the Ukrainian Catholic Church of the Resurrection with Rev. Fr. Oleg Bodnarski officiating. Marvin Procyshyn served as Cantor as well as the Ukrainian Catholic Choir. The Crossbearers were Perry and Tyler Nakonechny. The Epistle was read in English by Peggy Zazuliak and in Ukrainian by Jean Schur. The Knights of Columbus Dauphin Council #3497 and the Ukrainian Catholic Brotherhood served as honor guard. Interment followed in the Dauphin Riverside Cemetery. Pallbearers were Bobby Gingera, Brett Nakonechny, Orest Kushnerek, Ron Fedirchuk, Leonard Mutz and Pat Nakonechny. Honorary pallbearers were Gido’s grandchildren.
Should friends so desire, donations in memory of Edward may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or to the Ukrainian Catholic Church of the Resurrection.
May he rest in peace with God.
FOOTPRINTS
One night a man had a dream.
He dreamed he was walking along a beach with the Lord.
Across the sky flashed scenes from his life.
For each scene, he noticed two sets of footprints in the sand:
one belonging to him, and the other to the Lord.
When the last scene of his life flashed before him,
he looked back at the footprints in the sand.
He noticed that many times along the path of his life
there was only one set of footprints.
He also noticed that it happened
at the very lowest and saddest times in his life.
This really bothered him and he questioned the Lord about it. "Lord, you said that once I decided to follow you,
you'd walk with me all the way.
But I have noticed that during the most troublesome times in my life,
there was only one set of footprints. I don't understand why,
when I needed you most, you would leave me."
The Lord replied, " My precious, precious child.
I love you and would never leave you.
During your times of trial and suffering,
when you see only one set of footprints,
it was then that I carried you."
