Fisherman’s Prayer
Dear Lord,
I pray let me fish till that certain day,
And when your net is cast into the deep
I Pray you judge and find me fit to keep,
When in your home O’Lord I say,
Forever may I fish and stay.

| Obituary: |
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Bill Truffyn, husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather of Roblin, Manitoba. Bill passed away peacefully on June 24, 2009 with his family by his side.
Bill is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Mary and their four children, Theresa (Verlyn Ferguson), Ilona (Greg Boyce), Bill (Charlene MacIniss), Monica (Bruce Shamray), 10 grandchildren, Wade, Taryn, Brianna, Jenny, Mandy, Emma, Sarah, Taylor, Aidan and Liam and 7 great grandchildren, Brettyn, Brielle, Rhede, Tayva, Zoe, Zander and Dominic.
He will be sadly missed by his sisters, Edith (Cheropita), Kay (Tophan), Helena (Kines), and Shirley (Paulenko), as well as his many friends and family. He was predeceased by his mother Rose and his father, Kostyn, his brothers John and Mike, and his sisters Mary (Perry), Verna (Brighter), and Ruby (Keenes) as well as his son-in-law Greg Boyce.
Bill was born on December 3, 1918 in the Zorra district, a son of Rose and Kostyn Truffyn. The family eventually settled in the Shell Valley area.
Bill went to the Tummell school until he was 13 years old at which time he left to work on the farm. At 15, he went to Toronto. He got a job at a service station and often recalled this job where he earned two dollars a week. It didn’t take Bill long to figure out that this wasn’t a good plan, so he headed to work on the tobacco farms in southern Ontario where he earned a dollar a day. After the tobacco was over, he moved to White River, Ontario where he was employed by the Abitibi paper company. He worked for six months, earning $320 dollars. He carried this money in his shoe, while he “rode the freights” back and forth between Shell Valley and the tobacco farms. One summer while in Simcoe Ontario, he met and married his wife, Mary Ondusko (April 27, 1946).
Bill and Mary owned and operated the Cabana Grill and Parkside Motors in the 1950’s, 60’s and 70’s. During his years as a businessman, Bill was a member of the Elk’s Lodge. He continued to actively farm both in Roblin and Shell Valley. He loved the earth, planting in the spring and harvesting in the fall. He liked nothing better than to slip away from town and head out to the fields. He loved the passing of the seasons, was an avid observer of nature and never failed to appreciate God’s gifts. He was a responsible caretaker of everything to do with nature.
In his later years, Bill always enjoyed his “lively” political discussions with his coffee shop friends. While his health allowed, he enjoyed these get togethers immensely. Many of these men were his earlier hunting and curling companions. As you can imagine, the stories never ended and we still don’t know who the best curler was. Although a strong man, Bill was always humbling in his appreciation of life. He worked hard and because of his early beginnings when “simple survival” was a cause for celebration, he never missed an opportunity to champion the needs of the less fortunate. He never took anything in life for granted and he was a strong advocate for instilling this in all his children.
In his later years, Bill’s health suffered, but he never lost his love for the world. He insisted on having his hospital bed moved so he could look out the window at the changing seasons. He will be sadly missed by those of us left behind.
Prayers were offered on Friday, June 26, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. from the Sneath-Strilchuk Roblin Chapel. Funeral service was held on Saturday, June 27, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. from the St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Roblin with the Right Reverend Archimandrite Tykhon officiating. St. George's Choir served as Cantors with Emma Truffyn and Aidan Shamray serving as Crossbearers. The eulogy was delivered by Bruce Shamray. Interment followed in the St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Orthodox Cemetery in Roblin. Active Pallbearers were Verlyn Ferguson, Bruce Shamray, Wade Ferguson, Taylor Shamray, Bill Truffyn and Larry Kines. Honorary Pallbearers were Hugh Kines, Lloyd Weeres and all of Bill's friends and neighbours.
