Yakemishin, Victoria Alice (Peary)
January 28, 1946 – August 9, 2010
It is with great sadness that the family of Vicky Yakemishin announces her passing. Vicky succumbed to pneumonia in Dauphin General Hospital with daughter Canda, son in law Geoff, and sister Ethel at her side. She had been struggling with virulent cancer for the past six months. She was predeceased by her husband Bill in 1992.
Vicky was born in Brandon General Hospital on January 28, 1946. She was aptly named after the victory of the Second World War. She was the youngest child of George and Irene Peary. Vicky is survived by her daughters Cherri (Ron) Lamont and Canda (Geoff) Chafe, grandchildren Dallas and Dustyn Lamont and Mitchell and Brookelyn Chafe as well as her sisters Joyce Brown (Toronto), Ethel Hean (Dauphin) and brother George Peary (Abbotsford.) and their families.
Vicky epitomized service. She started her real life’s work as a counsellor at the Alcare Center in Ste. Rose Du Lac when she first moved to Dauphin in 1974. From that day onward there were very few social causes in the community that did not profit from Vicky’s unstinting support. As an addictions counsellor, she was instrumental in transforming lives. She received commendations from such organizations as the Addictions Foundation of Manitoba, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, The Dauphin and District Labour Coordinating Committee and the Regional Health Authority.
Vicky started her political career as a School Trustee in Dauphin Ochre River School Division. She completed nine years on the Board. During that time she was instrumental in launching a Peer Counselling Program that was emulated by other school jurisdictions across the province. She also developed and maintained the Student Match Program in Dauphin High School that paired seniors with incoming grade 8 students in an effort to ease the transition from elementary school for younger students. She also initiated the first Safe Grad in the province when her daughter Canda graduated from high school.
Vicky was subsequently elected to City Council in Dauphin in 1998. As a councillor, Vicky championed many causes, including Chair of the Parkland Crisis Center Board, council representative on the Dauphin Chamber of Commerce and the Chair of the Vermillion Trail Walking Committee. Other council committee appointments included Dauphin Recreation Commission, Dauphin Airport, Emergency Measures Committee, Community Development Corporation, the Dauphin Cultural Awareness Committee, the Cemetery Board, the Dauphin Band Group and the Heritage Committee.
Vicky dedicated her life to the citizens of the Parkland Region. She was especially attracted to those who were disenfranchised. She gave voice to noble causes and support to worthy endeavours. She worked with seniors to improve their quality of living. She will be missed by many who were touched by her genuine humanity.
A “Celebration of Life” service in honour of Vicky Yakemishin will be held at 1:00 PM on Friday, August 13 in the Dauphin Recreation Complex Banquet Room. In lieu of flowers, the family is honouring Vicky’s wish to have donations made to the Dauphin and District Community Foundation. Even as she anticipated death, Vicky’s thoughts were of others.

| Obituary: |
Antonia was born on January 2, 1920 at Hazelldell, Saskatchewan. She was the youngest in the family. Her education was in a country school house which she attended for eight years.
In 1938 her heart was captured by John Yawney and after a short courtship they married and settled on the farm in Rama, Saskatchewan. Here they began their family. Their eldest daughter Jane passed away after only 1 month. Five more daughters and five sons followed. In 1960 they moved to Yorkton and resided there for over 40 years.
Antonia was a true homemaker, lovingly preparing meals and attending to the household duties. She worked tirelessly raising her family. Many happy hours were spent picking mushrooms and berries with her family in the woods.
Her life was a life of service to her family and her church. She was dedicated to the UCWLC at St. Mary’s helping there for many years. Mom would attend the funeral services for the Parishioners from her parish of St. Mary’s in Yorkton, faithfully performing the corporal work of mercy of praying for the dead. She will be remembered for her commitment to her Church.
Our mother was our comfort, our inspiration. She instilled in her children a Love for God and would nightly gather us to pray. The nurturing spirit of Antonia embraced not only her family but her love of gardening. She spent many hours planting, weeding, preserving and enjoying the fruits of her labour.
Our mother’s strength and endurance will be cherished by her 10 children. She was predeceased by daughter Jane, her husband John, of 62 years, grandson Tyler, and all 6 of her siblings.
She leaves a legacy of love in 14 great grandchildren, 16 grandchildren, and 10 children: Iris of Dauphin, Ernest of Gorlitz, Evelyn Lemko (Ed) of Lloydminster, Irene of Springside, Rudy (Chris) of Cochrane, Mary (Tom) Stefaniw of Calgary, Nick(Lorna) of Mara Lake B.C., Theresa (Douglas) Proud of Peace River, James of Edmonton, Jerry of Othen, Saskatchewan.
The family deeply appreciates the compassion, dedication and care shown by the staff of St. Paul’s Home in Dauphin, and the spiritual support of the Sisters.
Rosary was said on Wednesday, October 21, 2009 at 6:30 p.m. from St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church in Yorkton, Saskatchewan. Prayers followed at 7:00 p.m. with Reverend Father Oleg Bodnarski officiating. Divine Liturgy and funeral service were held on Thursday, October 22, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. from St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church in Yorkton with Father Peter Pidskalny officiating and Ed Pindus serving as Cantor. Ed Lemko served as Crossbearer and also read the Epistle. Interment followed in the Yorkton City Cemetery. Pallbearers were Jerry Yawney, Ernest Yawney, Rudy Yawney, Nick Yawney, James Yawney and Douglas Proud.
If friends so desire, in lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Antonia may be made to St. Paul’s Home in Dauphin, or to St. Mary’s Church in Yorkton.
“Vichnaya Pamyat”. Eternal Memory.
“A good wife, who can find?
She is far more precious than jewels.
The heart of her husband trusts in her,
and he will have no lack of gain.
She rises while it is yet night,
and provides food for her household.
Her children rise up
and call her blessed.”
(Prov. 31)
