The family announces the passing of Thelma Zamonsky-Zacharuk on October 28, 2009 at the Maples Personal Care Home in Winnipeg, MB at the age of 97 years.

She was born on September 15, 1912 in Rossburn, Manitoba to Micky and Mary Skomorowski. She was the fifth child in a family of twelve, seven boys and five girls.

At the age of eighteen she married John Zamonsky, they lived together for 34 years, raising a family of four, Walter, Jean, Bill and Harry. In 1964 John passed away. She remarried Matt Zacharuk and was widowed again in 1994. Mother had a long and productive life. Of pioneer stock, homesteaded in the Grandview area; mother was one of the generation that opened up the west; by axe and grub-hoe. Her son Bill is farming the homestead, 72 years of Zamonsky’s on the same land.

A grand lady, “never heard her complain.” Leaves a progeny right across Canada. Grandchildren, forty-seven: great , great great, and great, great, great. Just three weeks ago her great, great granddaughter got married. Today we bury a Monarch Queen of rank and power. Honoured beauty, mother river of life.

Obituary:
On October 19, 2009 at St. Paul’s Home in Dauphin, Elizabeth Mary Zaplitny passed away peacefully.

Elizabeth was born Elizabeth Mary Koshey to Louis and Katherine (Woytowicz) Koshey on May 19, 1914 at the family residence on 12th Avenue South West in Dauphin. She had an older brother and three younger sisters.

She was predeceased by her husband Fred in 1964 and all of her siblings, in-laws, one daughter-in-law and a niece.

She is survived by her daughter Gail (Gerry) White of Dauphin, three sons Rick (Bev) of Dauphin, John (Linda) of Gilbert Plains and Michael (Michelle) of Regina, Saskatchewan; grandchildren Suzanne, Kristine, Christopher, Paula, Fredrick, Shane, Jennifer and Karen; great grandchildren Troy, Ryan, Holly, Toban, Rylan, Caden, Annabelle, Zain and Anderson and many other nieces, nephews and extended family.

By profession, Mom was a teacher who particularly loved the rural schools where she first taught. She was a voracious reader for most of her life. In her younger years she enjoyed sports, such as baseball and later on she was introduced to bowling by her good friend Wanda Gandza and she continued there for many years.

The Catholic Church was central to Mom and her family. Proudly, she was a 59 year member of the Catholic Women’s League which she joined in 1950 and where she held many executive positions. Mom was very involved in the St. Viator’s Choir as a member and choir director. She also spent several years as a member of the parish council. Her strong Catholic upbringing was evident in all of her daily activities.

As a lifetime resident of Dauphin she spent short periods living in Ottawa while Dad was a member of Parliament. The highlight of that part of her life was being presented to Queen Elizabeth II when she opened the Canadian Parliament in 1957.

Mom’s family would like to express their deepest gratitude to all of the staff at St. Paul’s Home, with a special mention to Sister Jean who was Mom’s guardian angel. At St. Paul’s, Mom was truly a member of their “family”.

Zradicka Edna
Date of birth:  February 27, 1925
Died:  April 4, 2010
Send Condolence
Prayers:  No Prayer Service
Funeral:  April 12, 2010, 2:00 pm, St. Paul's Anglican Church, Dauphin MB
Obituary:
Edna Mae Zradicka of Dauphin, MB died suddenly on Easter Sunday, April 4th, 2010 in Dauphin, MB at the age of 85 years.

Edna was born on Feb 27th, 1925 in Mill Cove, Newfoundland located in Gros Morne National Park. She lived the first year of her life with both her parents and her older sister, Edith. Her dad died when she was one and her mother had to move to Norris Point to work for Mr. Hiscock. His wife had passed away and he needed help with his three kids, Elsie, Lorne and Francis. Her mom and Mr. Hiscock fell in love and were married when she was five.

Each winter at first freeze the family would move to the woods to work at Bow Waters Pulp and Paper Mill and return to Norris point before spring thaw. During the years she had 5 more siblings, Leonard, Myrtle, Dorothy, Madeline (passed away at 2yrs) and Florence. With all the moving and the lack of teachers it was hard to get an education. She attended school here and there and completed her Grade 8.

When she was seventeen she moved to Toronto to work at Schrader and Son making plane parts. She then enlisted in the Navy and her training lasted for 3 months in Guelph Ontario. She was then stationed in Ottawa where she was a messenger. She stayed at this posting for 1 year, and then was transferred to BC. She moved around a lot in the next few months; 3 months in BC, 1 month in St John’s then to Halifax to stay in 1943. While in the Navy her jobs varied from delivering messages to laundry and cleaning.

Edna’s first child Marilyn was born on August 29, 1945 in her first marriage.

Edna met her future husband while they were in the navy. Reverend Dunlop married them on Aug 10, 1951 in Halifax.

Shortly after the wedding they traveled to Winnipeg to visit George’s parents.

Edna and George moved to Dauphin in March 1951. In the burrows block three children were born. David on August 13th, 1952, Georgie on May 21st, 1954 and Gail on Dec 30th, 1955. Edna stayed home with the kids and George worked at the Dauphin Musical store and was the instructor for the town band. They moved into their home at 1080 Fuller in 1960 and welcomed their fourth child Shirley, into the world on June 9th, ¬ 1960.

As the children got older, Edna started to look after foster kids and daycare kids. The foster kids she usually cared for were very young children.

When she wasn’t looking after children she had many hobbies and passions. She liked to bowl, curl, knit and read. She loved to garden, she had a huge garden behind the house on Fuller Street which she loved to work in and she would give the extra produce to friends and family. Edna loved to cook and fed many a houseful, which also included feeding grandchildren at lunch time and the many friends of the grandchildren. Edna was known as grandma to more than her own grandchildren! She also liked to spend time with friends; they would spend many a weekend night with close friend’s playing cards.

Edna also loved to travel. Las Vegas was one of her favourite places to go. She enjoyed looking at the scenery and only gambled a little. Her favourite hotel was the Stardust. They would also go to Newfoundland to see her family at least every third year.

Every summer when they weren’t travelling to Newfoundland, the family would go camping at Manipogo beach. This tradition started when Shirley was a baby and continued until 1983 when they built their cabin. They would camp for 2 weeks each summer and they all stayed in one big tent. They would cook most of their meals on the open fire and eat fish that they caught from the lake. After George retired they spent a lot of time there enjoying fishing and the country life.

It is said that, "A persons achievements may be judged by contributions to the community and fellow human beings." In that case, it would take a great many to fill the void her passing has left.

Edna was a people person, loving life. Always thoughtful of others, she always had time and energy for everyone.

Edna was very active in the community and was involved with many organizations. In particular Edna was one of the founding members (1962) and strong supporter of the Dauphin Rifle Club, an honorary member of the Manitoba Game and Fish Association and supporter of Ducks Unlimited. As a Member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #20, Dauphin, she was a regular at the Friday night legion gathering and supper.
Edna was predeceased by her parents (James McKenzie & Elizabeth McKenzie Hiscock nee Lang), her sister Edith Reid in 2001 and her husband George in 2003.

Edna leaves to cherish many fond memories, her loving family, Marilyn (Randy) Pinksen of Ponoka AB, David (Denise) Zradicka of Calgary, AB. Georgette (Dr. Gilbert) Bretecher; Gail (Glenn) Hockridge and Shirley (Darren) Genik all of Dauphin, MB, fifteen Grandchildren and seventeen Great Grandchildren and sister-in-law Gwen Zradicka of Richmond, BC. She will also be sadly missed by own little dog, Ruby.

Funeral services were held on Monday, April 12, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Paul's Anglican Church Dauphin. Rev. Bob Bettson officiated with internment in the Veteran’s Section of Riverside Cemetery with her husband George. David Zradicka played a Musical Tribute on his trumpet and Shirley Genik played Amazing Grace on her Flute. Last Post and Reveille were sounded by Bugler George Watson of Carmen, MB.
